Alstom has secured a seven-year contract extension to operate and maintain the AirTrain system at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York.

The agreement, signed with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), is valued at approximately 518 million USD (479 million EUR) and includes an option for an additional three years.

Since 2003, Alstom has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of the JFK AirTrain, which provides a critical link between the airport terminals and New York City’s public transportation network. The automated people mover (APM) system also connects to airport parking areas, rental car facilities, and hotel shuttle services.

The AirTrain plays a key role in reducing road congestion around JFK Airport. In 2024, it carried nearly 25 million passengers, with an average daily ridership of 68,000. Alstom ensures the system runs 24/7, maintaining high performance levels with a reported availability of 98.56%.

Under the new contract, Alstom will continue to manage operations and maintenance, covering vehicle fleets, station infrastructure, power distribution, signalling, and other essential components.

The fleet consists of 32 automated light metro trains that operate in configurations of one to four cars, depending on passenger demand. Over 230 employees, including 59 customer service agents, will be retained to support the system.

Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas, said:

We are proud of our ongoing partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK International Airport. Since 2003, our industry-leading airport system has safely and reliably transported millions of travellers and employees between terminals. As JFK's partner of choice, Alstom is excited to support the modernisation and expansion of AirTrain service at one of the world's busiest airports.

The extension of Alstom’s partnership with PANYNJ reaffirms the importance of the JFK AirTrain as a vital transport link, ensuring its continued reliability and efficiency for millions of passengers each year.

Teresa Rizzuto, General Manager of JFK International Airport said:

As we extend our partnership with Alstom, we strengthen our commitment to providing world-class service for the millions of travellers who rely on JFK Airport’s AirTrain each year. This long-standing collaboration goes beyond operational efficiency; the AirTrain plays a key role in reducing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity for passengers. The Port Authority looks forward to continue working with Alstom on JFK AirTrain, a critical piece of JFK’s infrastructure, and one that also fosters sustainability, local job creation, and community development. We also encourage all of our customers to consider using JFK AirTrain to avoid construction-related traffic while we rebuild the airport.
