Alstom has delivered the first of 29 Innovia APM R vehicles to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as part of an 87 million USD replacement project for the airport’s automated people mover (APM) Plane Train system.

The vehicles will support increased demand and help facilitate a planned extension to the existing system.

The Plane Train provides transport between terminals at Hartsfield-Jackson, which is currently the busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic. This latest delivery is part of a broader investment in infrastructure and transport technology to maintain service levels as passenger volumes grow.

The new vehicles were manufactured at Alstom’s facility in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. They form part of the airport’s third order of Innovia APM vehicles, bringing the total number in operation to 63.

Designed to enhance operational reliability, the Innovia APM R model offers improved energy efficiency, higher top speeds, and a lightweight aluminium construction. Each vehicle is capable of transporting up to 900 passengers per train.

Michael Keroullé, President Alstom Americas said:

Over the last 40 years, Alstom has proudly partnered with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to transport passengers at one of the world’s busiest airports. Alstom’s new Innovia APM vehicles will help the airport enhance capacity, support its expansion, and ensure travelers can smoothly embark on their next adventure or return home to their families.

The new vehicles are intended to improve the resilience of the airport’s internal transport system by reducing in-service failures and enabling more consistent performance.

The Plane Train extension is expected to support future expansion and strengthen multimodal transport links within the airport.

The current project is Alstom’s largest APM vehicle replacement contract to date and the second-largest APM project for the company in the Americas.

Alstom’s Innovia APM systems are in use at 15 airports across the United States and have been deployed at several major international hubs. The company reports an average fleet availability of 99.5% across its APM customers in the U.S.

The remaining vehicles under this contract are scheduled for delivery over the coming months.
