The AK cars were developed specifically for tourist routes in New Zealand and are designed to maximise viewing of the scenery popularised through the Lord of the Rings movies. Noske Kaeser Rail & Vehicle New Zealand developed a special underslung Train Carriage Saloon HVAC unit that features enthalpy sensors, which engages a 100% fresh air “free cooling” mode to take advantage of the unique climate in the central alpine region of the New Zealand South Island.
